Tomorrow night is the Bergen County Coaches Association All-County dinner. Time: 6 p.m. Location: The Fiesta in Wood-Ridge. Dress: To Impress.
The Bergen County Women Coaches Association will hold its All-County dinner Wednesday at 7 p.m. also at The Fiesta.
As we have done the past 4-5 years or so, I and other members of the Record Local Sports Staff will be on hand to present the award that goes to that signature athlete of the spring season. Tuesday night, the Bob Kurland Award will be handed out. Kurland was a long-time Record sports writer who covered everything from the World Series to Little League. I am proud to say that Mr. Kurland will also be there tomorrow night.
Wednesday, it will be the ladies turn, and I (and probably Paul Schwartz) will present the Spring Athlete of the Season award to the player – or players, hey it’s happened before.
And don’t forget to follow Varsity Aces on Twitter for a separate totally secret award.
Ok, so who is going to win?
Well, I can’t tell you that, only a handful of people know, me, the guy who makes the action poster in our office, the J-Rob, and, Ok, maybe an athletic director or two.
The Local Sports Staff of the Record/Herald-News (a.k.a. the Varsity Aces) come up with a list of nominees for the awards, then much debate ensues. And honestly, this is the first time we ever debated so long. I was supposed to have stuff into the printer last week, but didn’t do it until today.
The winner receives a framed action poster of themselves taken from our archives, and another copy goes to the school. They are 1 of a kind posters.
The only criteria are that the winner be a Bergen County resident, which does knock out a few people, sad to say. And, they have to be first-team All-County.
So who are our finalists? Well, we have some pretty recognizable names you know. We have a set of twins, we have 2 lacrosse players from Bergen Catholic, and we have a record 5 softball players nominated (it was a pretty big year for softball).
Listed in alphabetical order, of course, as to not give anything away.
The list of nominees for the Kurland Award are:
