These rankings are subject to corrections in team records between now and the official state seeding meeting Tuesday, Feb. 5.
The top 6 teams in each section qualify for the state tournament which begins on Monday, Feb. 11.
The top two seeds get byes in the first round while the third seed wrestles the sixth seed for the right to face No. 2 in the sectional semifinal and the fourth seed faces the fifth seed for the right to challenge the top seed in the sectional semifinal.
The rules do allow for a team to jump over a team directly in front of them if they have beaten that team head-to-head during the regular season.
So if all things stay the same, third-seeded Don Bosco would jump St. Peter’s into the second seed by virtue if its 29-25 upset victory over the Marauders last month. That would give the Ironmen a first-round bye on Monday night. But they would still have to go through St. Peter’s (at home instead of on the road) to earn a possible rematch with top-seeded Bergen Catholic in the sectional final. BC, which would face the winner of the first-round match between fifth-seeded St. Joseph and fourth-seeded Delbarton in the sectional semifinal, won the regular season meeting, 26-24, on Wednesday. There’s a killer section.
Clifton would also jump over North Bergen into the second seed in North 1, Group 4 by virtue of a head-to-head win in a quad last month. One interesting aspect of this section. Sixth-seeded Ridgewood has a victory over top-seeded Morris Knolls but wouldn’t be able to jump because they are seeded directly behind Morris Knolls.
Also, if the rankings remain the same, Pascack Hills will have qualified for the state tournament for the first time in 11 years.
The state group finals will be Sunday, Feb. 17 at the Pine Belt Arena in Toms River.
