Happy New Year and welcome back.  During the holiday break several River Dell athletic teams were busy competing, see below for some highlights from last week…

Congratulations to senior girls basketball player, Kate Brock for scoring career point #1,000 during the Holiday Hoop Jam Basketball Tournament held at River Dell.  The 1,000th point came on an offensive rebound put back to open the scoring in a game vs. Ridgewood on 12/30/11.  On 12/28/11 the Hawks defeated North Bergen by a score of 61-44 and Kate scored 29 in that game.  The girls play again on Thursday, 1/5/12 at home vs. Bergenfield at 7 pm.

Indoor Track competed at the Armory Track Center in NYC at the Track Universe meet on Friday, 12/30/11.  Craig Marulis tied two school records running a 23.7 in the 200 and a 51.8 in the 400.  Grace Behrens also tied a school record with a 5’0″ high jump.  Austin Berninger (47’3″ in the shot) and Calvin Hartman (12’6″ in the pole vault) each won the first individual championships at the meet.

Ice Hockey hosted the Charles Housley Memorial Tournament at the Ice House in Hackensack and went to overtime in both games played.  The Hawks defeated Hackensack 1-0 in the first game before falling to Lakeland 1-0 in OT in the finals.  Senior Zack Rosenoff got the game winner in OT vs. Hackensack.  Goalies Connor O’Reilly and Chris DeTitta were outstanding in net in both games.

Boys Basketball competed in the Bergen Holiday Festival Tournament at Bergenfield High School and won two of the three games they played bringing their record to 4-2 on the season.  The boys beat Elmwood Park by a score of 58-49 to open the tournament, Tim Barnes led all scorers with 25 points.  The team lost a close game to eventual champion Dwight Englewood, 35-32 but rebounded in the consolation game beating Bogota 60-58.  Ben Orth led all scorers with 16 points and Ryan Duran contributed 14 points.  The team is on the road this week playing at Dumont tomorrow night and at Bergenfield on Friday night, both games are at 7 pm.

Wrestling competed in the Bergen County Coaches Association, Holiday County Tournament at Rockland Community College on 12/29 and 12/30.  Senior Lenny Smith finished in second place at 220 lbs. and junior Nick Baranello took third place at 182 lbs.  Sophomores DJ Tirelli and Cezno Cariddi both finished in fifth place at 113 lbs. and 138 lbs. respectively.  The Hawks are at Indian Hills on Wednesday before returning home for a dual meet with Ramsey on Friday night at 7 pm.

Bowling is back in action tomorrow at Bowler City in Hackensack against Tenafly at 4 pm.

Swimming takes on Tenafly on Sunday, 1/8 at the Tenafly JCC at 7 pm.
